The Coverage Through Work Is Probably Not Enough
Group life insurance is a real benefit with two specific limitations most people have not checked.
If someone tells you they have life insurance, there is a good chance they mean the policy that came with the job. It counts. It is also usually smaller than people assume and it usually does not follow them out the door.
Limitation one: the amount
Group coverage is often expressed as a multiple of salary, commonly one or two times. That sounds substantial until you set it against a mortgage balance, the years of income a family would need, and education costs.
Run those figures rather than estimating. Our needs worksheet subtracts existing coverage from estimated obligations, and the gap is frequently larger than people expect.
Limitation two: it is generally tied to the job
Leave the employer and the coverage typically ends. Some plans allow conversion or portability, often at a higher cost and within a limited window after employment ends.
This matters most in exactly the situation nobody plans for: a layoff, a career change, or an early retirement occurring at an age when individual coverage costs more than it did a decade earlier.
The health question underneath it
Group coverage often requires little or no medical underwriting. Individual coverage generally does. The practical result is that the ability to obtain individual coverage on favorable terms tends to be highest when you are younger and healthiest, which is exactly when people feel least urgency about it.
This is not a reason to rush. It is a reason to know where you stand while the option is open rather than after it closes.
A short review
- Find out the actual amount of your group coverage, in dollars.
- Find out whether it is portable or convertible, and on what terms.
- Check the beneficiary designation on it. Group policies are among the most commonly outdated.
- Compare the total to what your household would actually need.
That fourth item is where a conversation is usually worth having. The first three you can do yourself in an afternoon with a call to human resources.
