The Vehicle Decision Most People Make Emotionally

Buying, leasing, and keeping what you have are three different financial outcomes.

August 2, 2026  ·  Published by Atkinson Solutions LLC

A car is usually the second largest purchase a household makes and it is the one most often decided in an afternoon, at a dealership, under time pressure. The arithmetic is worth doing before you are sitting across from someone.

Leasing

You pay for the vehicle's decline in value over the lease period plus finance charges. Payments are generally lower than a loan on the same vehicle. At the end you return it and own nothing.

Watch: mileage limits with per mile charges beyond them, excess wear provisions, acquisition and disposition fees, and the amount due at signing.

Buying with a loan

Higher payments, and at the end you own an asset with remaining value. If you keep the vehicle past the loan term, the payment stops entirely while the car keeps working, which is where most of the financial advantage of buying actually comes from.

Watch: long loan terms. Stretching to six or seven years lowers the payment but raises total interest and increases the odds of owing more than the vehicle is worth for an extended period.

Keeping what you have

Frequently the strongest option and rarely presented as one, because nobody at a dealership benefits from it. A paid off vehicle with predictable maintenance often costs far less annually than either alternative.

Before replacing a vehicle, compare the annual repair cost you are actually incurring against twelve times a new monthly payment. The comparison is often lopsided in a direction people do not expect.

Run the comparison

Our buy or lease calculator compares total cost over the same number of years, counting the vehicle's value at the end on the buying side. That last part is what makes the comparison fair.

The cost that continues after the purchase

The payment is not the total. Fuel, insurance, registration, and maintenance continue for as long as you have the vehicle. Our mileage calculator turns fuel economy into an annual dollar figure, which is the only form in which it is comparable to anything else.

Where it fits

A vehicle payment competes directly with retirement contributions, emergency savings, and debt payoff. It is not a small decision made in isolation. Whatever you decide, decide it against the rest of the picture rather than on its own.
